My first hostel experience was at the Aloha, and I came away with a mixed reaction. After staying in other hostels across Europe, I have to give Aloha two "stars". The staff was friendly and helpful, the rooms were reasonably clean, and the breakfast of baguette, jam, orange juice, coffee, & hot chocolate was very good. On the negative side, there are two showers per floor and they were often filthy, with drains overflowing because of hair blocking the drains. I learned to shower at 5 p.m. when the showers were cleaned at opening time. The mattresses were thin, and some guests didn't use linens at all, though they were provided. There's a nice party atmosphere with the bar on the first floor, but the noise was excessive at times until 2 a.m. The place is rather hard to find, but a metro stop is only 3 blocks away.

When I went into my locked dorm room (a one key place) just after lockout ended and there was some guy in there who wasn't even staying in the room, I thought it was a little strange. I stayed in the big dorm room in the 2nd building in loft/attic. It was ok, not terribly clean, not filthy. I was a bit concerned about my pack here, as they have no lockers and when everyone in a room is using the 1 key, anyone can go in and out. They serve the typical continental baguette and coffee for breakfast, but it ends at 9 am. The lockout's from 11am-5pm, a long time, but you can put your stuff in a luggage room if you arrive early. They also have a no outside alcohol policy, so if you want to drink, you're stuck with what they have. A little pricy at 22 euro a night for a dorm bed.

I stayed at the Aloha hostel in Paris in October 2001. This was my first trip to Paris and my first time backpacking and staying in a hostel. This hostel was clean, the beds were comfortable and the coffee was excellent. The one thing I will always remember about this hostel was the staff. Incredible. On my second day in Paris I sprained my ankle very, very badly coming down the stairwell at the Sacre-Coeur. I had to take a taxi back to the hostel as I couldn't walk. This being the middle of the afternoon the hostel was closed, but when the staff saw me being helped out of the taxi by the driver they rushed to my aid to help. I was helped to my room where a bucket of cold water was brought for my ankle (ice is unavailable). Their constant concern for my foot was very much appreciated. On the morning I was to catch my plane back to Canada, the Paris Transit system decided to go on strike. The manager of the hostel sat on the phone for over an hour to get me a cab to the airport. I can't say enough about the staff and service at this hostel. When you get to Aloha tell Andy that Linda with the ankle says Hello!!
