Friendly staff, private room very poor and with a stinky moquette (carpet). Good connection to the city center.

This hostel had a wonderful location, right at the end of Prince St, with a great view of the castle. I didn't really feel like cleanliness was an issue, although I though that everything looked a little bit worn. The showers were good, although one was broken in the ladies while I was there, and nothing seemed to be done. The bar on the first floor is a great place to meet people, but be warned: there is live music until 5 am on Friday and Saturday, and it does carry around the hostel a bit. No lockers, but a locked room: the person at the desk said it gets very crowded on the weekend, didn't use it. The kitchen was really nice and big, and breakfasts had plenty of toast and jam, cereal, and hot water for tea and coffee. I would stay here again, if only for the location, but you should be aware that it is not the quietest place.

This is definately a horrible place to stay. First of all, the very unkind receptionist made us come back THREE times before we could finally check in - with a lot more of unneccesary hassle and rules, though. We had stains in our sheets and in general both the room and the bathrooms didn't seem to be cleaned more often than every once in a while. One of the lady's toilets was spoiled with blood and two days later it was still there! Furthermore, the showers were completely transparant which was very uncomfortable and apart from that, the ladies bathroom didn't even have any mirror! (I really missed that, preparing for Saturday night in Edinburgh). Generally, people walking around had quite a dodgy impression. Please, if you want to have a good time in Edinburgh do yourself a favour and choose one of all the other hostels throughout the city - this one was really disappointing.
