I thought that the Generator was an excellent hostel. It was cheap for 5 of us to stay there. It could get a little noisy at times, but nothing too bad. It is a hostel, after all...as long as you don't go in thinking you're getting a 5 star hotel it should be fine. Some of the bathrooms weren't the greatest, I would suggest showering in the ones in the basement, they were the nicest ones we found. The bar is great, the staff is friendly, and I met lots of people from all over the world. I'll definitely be staying there again.

Good points - security, staff, warm.

Bad points - the other people in my shared dorm who spent the whole 3 days pissed, stoned and high on ketamin who never went to bed before 9.00am, partied all night, running around shouting, completely off their faces.

Apart from the bed linen the place was filthy dirty.

Traveling by myself, this place made it really easy to meet people. I made good friends with some Aussies, a guy from Poland, and some Germans. Everyone was friendly and it was a great first stop from the states. Even being a bit older than everyone, I am 31, I still had a great time. I recommend this place.

I must have stayed at a different hostel to those other reviewers. I hated this place. Too big, tacky and dirty. I guess if you like shopping malls you'll like this place. I checked out pretty quick.

It was a good hostel. The room was clean, reasonably quiet and the breakfast was decent. Internet was waaaay expensive though and the room was also a lot of money. Safe though and more or less worth it.

Excellent hostel! I was travelling by myself and easily made plenty of friends in the bar on the first night. The beds were clean, lockers to lock up your backpack, bunk-mates were quiet and courteous, the restooms were so-so (could use a little better cleaning, but for 15 pounds I guess you can't expect too much). All in all, made my visit to London very pleasurable and I will definately stay here again next time I visit.

Loved this place! Staff was wonderful and hostellers were friendly (not mean) drunks. You go here for the bar, and the emphasis is clearly on drinking. It's motto is: "Hangover Included" and there are sponsored drinking games and other events every night. Lots of pool tables. Good dinner specials and free breakfast with unlimited toast and cereal. It's a huge place with 800-beds, but people seemed to respect the no-noise policy on the dorm-floors. There's plenty of space to be loud- the bar, two sit-in lounges, an internet lounge. Rooms were fine with comfy mattresses. Bit expensive, but most of London is that way. Great place if you're looking to party and socialize!

(Nov 2003 stay) Biggest issue I had was noise, even being in a private room... and this is going to depend on who else is staying there at the time... if my fellow guests kept the noise where the generator posts that they should (i.e. the bar, eating area) and not in the hallways and especially outside the front door, where their voices echo big time at 2am in the cul de sac/alley that the entrance is in, there wouldn't be as much of a noise issue... not all guests are like this, but some seem to care only about themselves and their group of friends that they are traveling with... that sucks...

Otherwise, Generator had great breakfast, overall facilities were clean enough, and was also nice to see structural improvements going on when I was there. It's really a nice place in a good spot, and is maintained well enough. (also stayed briefly in Apr 2002)

Actually one of the best hostels I've stayed at. Had great people in my dorm and we all got a locker & free towels. Bar was fantastic and open till 2 in the morning. Embarrassed myself on Karaoke night!! Would definitely recommend this hostel, especially as the location is so good.

Some of the dorms can be really loud! The hostel seemed fairly clean, but while waiting to check in, a few people ahead of me were airing their complaints-someone in their assigned bed, dirty linen, etc. The showers were pushbutton type, not hot enough (at least for me) and there wasn't a secure place to hang belongings. They do have free towels. The second time I stayed there, they lost my reservation, but gave me a better room.

Not too clean, too many *young* teens stayed there nor was the breakfast all that good. The best thing was the proximity of a tube station - a hundred yards, or so.
