The hostel was close enough to the train station, and easy enough to
find if you follow the map. The main Roman attractions are about 10-15 minute
walk down the main street, giving this hostel prime location. The staff are
very nice and welcoming. Although sometimes they can be a little weird, and
tend to treat customers like children, which can be good for safety, and
cleanliness, but can also be annoying. The rooms and bathrooms are VERY clean,
and really nice. There is a lockout, and curfew, which can be annoying, but
obviously make the hostel safer. They also supply small lockers, in the rooms.
The only bad thing I’d have to say is that the breakfast is a little small
(one croissant and some insta-coffee), and there isn’t a kitchen, but they do
have a fridge and some plates and cutlery to use. All in all, a great hostel,
but reserve far ahead of time.
Ciao!

Location
Excellent, on a side street off the main avenue (I want to say Via Nationale?)
and halfway between the Roman Forum and the Vatican, easy to get either place.
Several people commented on the fact that it was in a nice part of town and a
lot of the others were hard to get to or in shady locations.
Cleanliness
Good overall. The shower situation was a bit obnoxious b/c there were only two
that were shower/bathrooms, so if someone was in there taking a shower, you
were stuck waiting to use the restroom. One other note, the two dogs run
around constantly and drove my friend nuts! I thought they were cute but there
was hair/dust everywhere, Rome itself is crazy-dusty so don't expect it
super-impecable, but there was nothing gross about the place and the
linens/bedspreads were made up daily.
Rooms
Good. More beds than most of the places we stayed. Can either book a bed in
the dormitory (there are two that have 6-8? beds apiece) or upstairs in the
loft area that has 2 beds I think. The upstairs was the only part with A/C
when I went in June of 2003.
Lockers
No big lockers for your bags, although I never felt like we'd need one, in
order to get out you have to be buzzed out by one of the workers so someone
probably isn't going to take off with your whole bag. They had locked safes in
the room, one for each guest that Simone highly encouraged us to use. He said
the pickpockets in Rome are among the best in the world. This was the only
city that we ended up leaving our moneybelt in the hostel, we usually just
grabbed $20-30 and headed out for the day.
Other details
This place does have a curfew (1am) which was a bit of a bummer since it was so
hot when we went there. Half the hostel went out one of the nights when it was
cooler (to walk around not to club) and I could have stayed out later. There's
also a lockout, which is a bit of a bummer in the 105 degree heat, but really,
who wants to be inside when you're on vacation anyways.
Really what sells this place to me was Simone, we arrived (late at night, not
by 2pm by the way - I prearranged it with him) and the next day he gave us a
map of Rome and circled all of the things of interest and told us general
details (like don't both buying water, the water in Rome is safe to drink, we
drank Gallons of it and sweat it all out). He also called around when I was
trying to find a particular tour, helped us out by recommending some of the
BEST restaurants we went to and just generally really tried to be helpful. He
made breakfast each morning, and one morning when he burnt our batch, he felt
bad so gave me homemade biscuits and preserves. He let me use his kitchen sink
to wash out the cherries I had bought and just overall was one of the nicest
owners I met on my month long trip.
Ciao!

Great location, friendly & helpful staff... Complaint--a
bit like staying with your parents--too many rigid rules
(e.g. pack your bag every morning so they can make up
your bed(?); whether you're staying or not they make up
the beds, and your stuff is always getting shuffled
around). You sometimes feel like they're breathing down
your neck and cleaning up after you. Also, the place
would have a better vibe (more social) if they didn't
always have the television on. They play a movie or two
every night, instead of just letting folks hang out and
visit. I would have enjoyed just sitting around and
talking to all the cool folks who were staying there...
Not bad, but I wouldn't stay there again. |

Very clean (and new), great location, very helpful
staff. I would definitely recommend this place and if I
am ever in Rome again, I will stay there again! If it
hadn't been for Simon's great map, I would have missed
the "Bones Church". |

On
cleanliness, helpfulness or staff a definite 5 stars,
but if you are loking for a party scene, this not the
place. Why would you want to party in a hostel when you
could go out in the squares anyway? Met a bunch of
people at the hostel and we went out every night and
enjoyed warm showers, and great breakfast in the
morning. Simon, the owner, is very helpful, the dogs are
cute, and Simon customizes your very own map. Overall 5
stars. |

This is the best hostel not only in Rome, but the best
of our trip. The staff was very friendly, gave us tons
of tips and directions..it was very comfortable--it felt
like home!! Book this one in advance, it's great!! Very,
very clean, the location is safe, and near the Colleseum,
rooms are dorm style w/bunks (about 8 beds per room) we
had different roommates each night, but all were very
friendly and fun. showers and bathrooms exceptionally
clean. Lockers available. |
