Where We Stayed

This is a brief summary of some of the places we stayed during our 7 month trip in Europe in 2000. Things might have changed since then so take that into consideration.

Netherlands:

Stayokay Vondelpark - Zandpad 5 1054 GA Amsterdam, Netherlands Ph: 3120 5898 996
1 set of bunks, private bathroom.
Sterile type rooms, hostel catered to a ton of school groups. Plain breakfast included. Good location but worth getting a hotel room instead. Dorms looked clean and well laid out. No kitchen as we had read somewhere.

Amstel Botel - Oosterdokskade 2-4 1011 AE Amsterdam, Netherlands Ph: 31 206264247
Double room, private bathroom
Located by the train station on a large, moored boat. Rooms have TV and do not include breakfast. Pay the extra for canal side and try and get a room on the top floor, if possible. A very good value for Amsterdam.

Belgium:

Bauhaus Hostel - Langestraat 135 Brugges, Belgium Ph: 32 (0) 50341093
1 set of bunks, shared bathroom.
Walls tended to be a bit thin, so it was loud but not unbearably so. No kitchen but a restaurant with great food. Breakfast not included. Private room was clean but a bit dark.

Snuffel Sleep In - Ezelstraat 47-49 Brugges, Belgium Ph:  32 (0) 50 33 31 33
1 set of bunks, shared bathroom.
Very central. Has a kitchen and a pub. Seriously iffy showers. Breakfast available but not included.

Sleepwell Hostel - Rue du Damier 23, Brussels, Belgium Ph: 32 (0) 2 218 50 50
2 single beds, shared bathroom.
No kitchen, annoying 10 - 4 lockout. Great showers. Includes breakfast. Centrally located.

Globetrotters Nest Hostel - Vlagstraat 25 Antwerp Belgium Ph: 32 03 236 9928
Double bed, shared bathroom.
Warm, friendly hostel with 1 double, 1 dorm and 1 quad. Kitchen but no fridge. Includes breakfast. Double is beautiful - hardwood floors and a gas fireplace.

Ireland

Glen Court Hotel - Dublin, Ireland
Double bed, shared bathroom.
Centrally located. Run down but extremely clean. Cooked breakfast included.

Wicklow Bay Hostel- Marine House, Wicklow Town, Ireland. Ph: 353 404 69213
1 set of bunks, shared bathroom.
Small doubles, huge kitchen and right on the ocean. Wins our "Best Showers" award.

Salmon Weir Hostel- 3 St. Vincent's Avenue, Galway, Ireland Ph: 353 91 561133
Double bed, shared bathroom.
Friendly hostel in a good location with 2 small kitchens. Great value. Crowded and busy but has personality.

Scotland

Berkley Globetrotters Hostel - 56 Bekerley St, Glasgow, Scotland Ph: 44 (0) 141 221 7880
1 set of bunks, shared bathroom.
Noisy and dirty. Includes a weak breakfast but not if it's gone when you get there. 3 common rooms and a kitchen. Not highly recommended.

Edinburgh Backpackers Hostel 65 Cockburn St., Edinburgh, Scotland, 44 (0) 131 220 2200
Double bed, shared bathroom.
Big, apartment style rooms with TV. Shares bathroom and kitchen with 3 other "apartments". Private hostel rooms are located across the street from the dorm rooms.
