Where We Stayed

This is a brief summary of some of the places we stayed during our 7 month trip in Europe in 2000. Things might have changed since then so take that into consideration.

Switzerland:

SYHA Hostel - 28-30 Rue Rothschild 1202 Geneva, Switz. Ph: 41 22 732 62 60
2 single beds, private bathroom.
Big, bright doubles with toilet and sink. Lockout 10-4. Reception closed 10-2. Kitchen, laundry, TV room, Internet.

Backpackers Villa - Alpenstr. 16, CH-3800 Interlaken, Switzerland Ph: 41 (0)33 826 71 71
Double bed, shared bathroom
The perfect hostel. Beautiful double with hardwood floors. Great kitchen. Well run and clean. Dorms looked fantastic. Included breakfast.

Lucerne Backpackers - Alpenquai 42, 6005 Lucerne, Switzerland Ph: 41 (0)41 360 04 20
2 single beds, shared bathroom
Student dormitory like rooms, very clean. All rooms have balconies, half have a view of the lake. Kitchen and book exchange. Staff is very friendly. Hostel is walking distance from the station and right across from the lake.

Foyer Hottingen - Hottingenstrasse 31, Zurich, Switzerland Ph: 261 93 15
Double bed, shared bathroom
Perfect! Sparkling clean and a new kitchen on every floor. (6 room per floor) I believe the dorms offered are only for women. Breakfast included. Quiet, not for those looking for a social scene.

Italy:

Albergo Salerno - Milan, Italy. Ph: 02 2046870
Double bed, shared bathroom.
Plain, older rooms near the train station. Not a great value.

Casa Gerotto - Campo San Geremia 238, Venice Ph: 71 53 61
Double bed, shared bathroom.
Clean, bright rooms near the vaperetto and train station. A bit older but a good value for Venice. Bring insect repellent if you want your windows open during the summer.

La Toretta - Piazza della Chiesa, Vico Volto 20, Manarola (Cinque Terre) Ph: +39 0187 920327
Double bed, shared bathroom.
Great new rooms with small balconies and nice views. Good breakfast (not included) served under the lemon trees. Light sleepers may not like that the church bell chimes on the hour, every hour. Apartments for rent as well. Book in advance.

Ottavani Piazza Ottavani 1, Florence, Italy  Ph: 055 239 62 23
Double bed, private bathroom.
Clean, simple rooms near the train station. A good deal - except in the heat as they had no fans. Breakfast included.

Santuario Casa di S. Caterina -Via Camporegio 31 Ph: 0 577 44 177
Double bed, shared bathroom.
Clean, simple rooms with views of the Duomo. Run by nuns, they don't seem to be bothered if you aren't married and want to stay there. Will accept reservations by fax only.

Il Girasole - Via Linciano 47, 80071 Anacapri,Italy Ph: 39 81 8372351
Double bed, private bathroom.
2 star hotel in Anacapri, up the hill from Capri. Pool with beautiful deck. Rooms have TV. Don't pay more for a room with a view, they are all the same. Rates seem negiotable when they aren't fully booked.

Gullivers House - Via Palermo 36, 00184 Rome, Italy Ph: +39 064817680
2 single beds, shared bathroom.
Clean and bright with new wood floors. Close to the station. Only complaint was there was only 2 bathrooms/showers (1 for males, 1 for females) and that the staff weren't there twice when we came back and tried to buzz in. Staff were very helpful, however. Not many doubles (only 1, I think) so reserve in advance.
